Report Outlines Challenges To Inclusion Of Affordable Housing In Transit-oriented Development

HUD and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) have outlined challenges to the inclusion of affordable housing in developments near transit facilities and suggested some steps to resolve the problems. In a joint report to Congress, HUD and the FTA discussed the ways in which transit-oriented development (TOD) can reduce combined housing and transportation costs and address the need for housing that serves a range of incomes. "TOD presents unique opportunities to create housing in proximity to public transportation and to address zoning, land use, and financing issues that affordable housing developers typically encounter when developing mixed-income housing projects," the report says.
