In a U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) survey on the mortgage foreclosure crisis, 71 percent of the 42 responding cities reported that the number of vacant and abandoned properties has increased during the past year because of the crisis. The cities reported an estimated total of 79,186 vacant and abandoned properties, with individual numbers ranging from about 16,400 in Baltimore, 10,000 in Buffalo, 8,000 in Las Vegas, and 4,900 in Columbus down to 12 in New Berlin, Wis., and five each in Santee, Calif., and Linden, N.J. Frisco, Texas, reported no such properties.
