Government Operates Duplicative Programs for Economic Development, Homeless Assistance, GAO Says

The federal government operates 80 economic development programs and over 20 programs to assist the homeless, according to the first annual U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on federal programs with duplicative goals or activities. The report, which was mandated by Congress, is intended to identify federal programs or functional areas where unnecessary duplication, overlap, or fragmentation exists, the actions needed to address such conditions, and the potential financial and other benefits of doing so.
