The U.S. mortgage market won't be able to function in its current form without some continuing government role, according to witnesses at an October 13 hearing of the House Financial Services Committee's subcommittee on international monetary policy and trade. While other countries may have similar homeownership rates without our level of government-backed financing, they said, their systems are fundamentally different, with most mortgages held in portfolio by banks.
