Chains To Watch

Each year, as HOTELS researches Chains To Watch, we are often asked what does it take to make it onto our annual list of noteworthy hotel companies. There is no single answer to that question, but there are some key criteria. Given the global readership of HOTELS, it is probably only fair for the four profiles to be geographically diverse. This year's quartet of selected companies certainly match that criteria: Hyatt Hotels/Hyatt International are based in Chicago and cover virtually every major global market. SPHC Hotel Group, based in Sydney, is a leading player in the Australian market. Memphis-based Promus Hotel Corp. was the eighth-largest hotel company in the world last year. And Hilton International, based in Watford, Herts, England, represents the dramatic market forces at work in the U.K. as its lodging industry has moved into a consolidation phase as intense as any seen in years.
