ASID: 2019 POSITIVE DESPITE CHALLENGES

The growing interior design community can expect a positive business forecast this year. This is according to the newly released 2019 Outlook and State of Interior Design (OSID) report by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Across its 90+ pages, the annual report aims to provide an extensive summary of the design industry and profession with insight on economic trends, market research, and future insights. Randy Fiser, Hon. FASID, CEO, ASID, said the report provides designers with resources to better plan their strategies and offers them guidance on how to steer their businesses and careers. "As our industry and profession continue to experience rapid change in an increasingly globalized world, we must become agile and adaptable to these shifts and apply knowledge in order to thrive," he explained. 2018 laid a solid foundation for the interior design industry, with increases in the number of firms and inflation. But the organization warned the road ahead is not without challenges. Among the major risks to watch for in 2019 are further increases in tariffs, shifting energy prices, the pace of interest rate increases by the Federal Reserve, competition from other firms and price increases on goods, services, and construction material. With changes in future business - from new markets to a heightened demand for wellness and diversity solutions - smaller firms will need to innovate their business models, and larger firms will need to focus on employee retention, according to the report. New attitudes and a wider scope of responsibilities will bolster creativity, innovation, and growth within the industry. Also included in the report is an insider overview that includes perspectives from more than 10 leading design innovators.
