NEW ENERGY STAR STANDARDS GO INTO EFFECT IN OCTOBER

Fixture and portables manufacturers wishing to use the ENERGY STAR label will have until October to adjust performance to meet new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements. Generally, luminaires must increase efficiency 30 percent above current performance and 40 percent higher by mid-2013. Quick start-up, high quality light output, reduced toxics in fixture materials, performance labeling, as well as a three-year warranty are among the criteria. The provisions of Luminaires Version 1.0 (Luminaires VI .0) cover both fluorescent and LED lighting and the light source is required to offer 65 Im/W for non-directional residential fixtures with exceptions for some chandeliers and vanity lights. Product performance must be certified by an EPA-recognized third-party laboratory. Except for some halogen-based "outdoor fixtures, those using screw-base landholders without dedicated ballasts are not eligible to earn the ENERGY STAR label.
