My father's business - Village Hardware, a full-line hardware store in the small town of Cambridge, Ill. - prepared me for my own career. His showroom offered several categories and the wide range of hardware, floor coverings, cabinetry, appliances, plumbing, and heating made it a success for many years. Surrounded by this as a child not only afforded me the opportunity to visit my dad whenever I wanted, but also gave me the background for eventually owning my own multi-line business. I learned at an early age that it does not come without a lot of hard work, demonstrated by the many hours my dad devoted to the store. It also requires the right employees who bring your ideals to the customer every day, the proper product mix, and most of all, a love for what you do.
