Effect of Gastric Emptying On The Serum Concentration And Antihypertensive Effect Of Sustained-Release Nifedipine

Most antihypertensive agents are absorbed in the intestine and take effect when the serum concentration increases. Accordingly, gastric emptying may affect the absorption of drugs and their serum concentrations. However, this effect has rarely been studied. We investigat- ed the effects of gastric emptying on the absorption of nifedipine, a typical antihypertensive agent, and its antihypertensive effect. The acetaminophen method with a standard solid meal was used to evaluate gastric emptying in 20 patients with essential hypertension.
