Keeping the Profit in Shorter Web Press Runs

Web printing companies today face not only the prospect of producing shorter runs but also the challenge of running these jobs profitably. Full- and narrow-web press manufacturers recognize these factors and are striving to provide equipment, technology and solutions that can make their equipment more profitable on shorter runs. To increase margins on shorter runs, web companies are taking advantage of press makers' advances while enhancing this purchased technology with their own initiatives. Andrew Fetherman, Press division manager for Muller Martini, says, "Some of our customers have told us their run lengths have dropped considerably even during the past two years. A customer that specializes in direct mail printing told us that more targeted mailings have meant shorter runs for their company. We see printers that used to do run lengths of 1 million but now are printing 10 runs of 100,000."
