Press for dewatering and smoothing a paper web comprises an extended press nip through which the web (15) passes between two water-absorbing dewatering belts (3, 4) and which is followed by a calender nip formed by two smooth pressing surfaces. The web runs from the press nip to the calender nip with no open draw, is separated from the pressing surfaces immediately after the calender nip and is transferred to an air-permeable drying wire.
