STEP ON UP?

I wonder if you would be good enough to to clarify a point concerning the attenuation of the Audio Research LS17 preamp reviewed in October. My speakers are very sensitive Lowthers, 100dB+, so using them with a preamp having fairly high gain and stepped attenuation of more than 2dB is absolutely hopeless as the volume is either too high or too low.rnI have recently tried a Pass Labs preamp, with adjustable output of either 4 or 12dB, resulting in the 4dB proving too much. I am not at all technical which is why I am confused about Paul Miller's Lab report on the LS17. It appears to me, hopefully, that one can vary the output, but does that also mean that one can also attenuaternon a particular output thereby getting a really precise volume setting?
