Here we are, nearly a half-century away from the day The Beatles released their first single with one of their own compositions, for a major label. Since then, their work has become one of the most 'covered' bodies of songs ever, placing them in the ranks of Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Hoagy Carmichael and the like: Beatles songs have been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Tom Jones, Maurice Chevalier, Count Basie, Wes Montgomery, Stevie Wonderrnand even Frank Sinatra. Their music has transcended genre, age groups, national tastes and other boundaries never to be breached by pretenders to the 'Greatest Croup of All Time' throne such as Radiohead, Oasis, ad nauseum. As Bob Geldof said during a radio special about George Harrison, 'We now know that their music will last forever.'
