I fully expected the MAI power amp to behave 'uniquely' in the lab, and I was not disappointed. For starters it idles at just 4W but consumes 130W at its rated 60W/8ohm output which, incidentally, it achieves by the skin of its transistors. Power output into 4, 2 and 1ohm is 105W, 165Wand 100W with absolutely no headroom under dynamic conditions [see graph 1, below], such is the rigid regulation of its power supply. So the MA1 is no 'brick outhouse' and needs to be matched with speakers no tougher than the B&W 802's used during my listening.
