A fragmented mandibula of a horse with a strong deformation of the diastema region was found in the course of archaeological excavations in the northern part of Lower Austria and originates from a stallion that was approximately 14 years old. Due to accompanying discoveries of characteristic potsherds, it is possible to date the find back to the late Iron Age. Between the canine and the 2nd premolar an unusual hourglass shaped constriction can be observed. It can be assumed that the horse was tied with a thong bridle, which caused this deformation after years of sustained use.
