Yamaha DSP-Z7 (£2000)

The DSP-Z7 must have been something of an enigma for Yamaha. You spend four-years and several gazillion Yen developing the flagship DSP-Z11 multichannel amp and then a credit-crunched consumer market demands something altogether more affordable. Enter the DSP-Z7 - a sort of DSP-Z11 on a diet. The most obvious difference is the number of channels, down from 11 to 'just' seven. If the clue is in the name then God help me testing Yamaha's next model down, the RX-V3900. On paper at least, the difference in core specification between the Z7 and Z11 is not that great. The headline claim of 140W for the main seven channels remains the same.
