Although the Cold War showed signs of thawing under Kruschev it was by no means over a decade later. When Karajan took the Berlin Philharmonic on tour in May 1969 to Moscow and Leningrad, and then on to London and Paris, the Soviet Establishment (then embroiled with China over communist principles) must have thought they personified Western decadence. In fact the Russian cultural attache to East Berlin made direct representations against the visit but was over-ruled.
