GAMUT PHI7 (£3940)

Gamut claims a high 90.5dB sensitivity for the Phi7, not far off the highest figure we recorded, taking a straight RMS figure from the spectral data, of 89.9dB. But this is misleading, the more representative pink noise and music-shaped figures being substantially lower at 87.6 and 86.8dB respectively. This large disparity is indicative of a non-flat axial frequency response, that of the Phi7 being pretty flat only to about 4kHz, above which the output rises inexorably towards higher frequencies, being about 6dB up by 20kHz. Frequency response errors are on the high side at ±5.1 and ±4.9dB as a result, but bear in mind that Gamut recommends that the speakers fire straight down the room rather than being toed-in to the listening position.
