Gamut's Phi7 is top of a four-model range. 'Phi' in the context of this Gamut speaker and its siblings is the 'golden ratio', 1:1.618, which students of art and architecture will know from the aesthetically pleasing proportions it yields. It is variously deployed by Gamut in its speakers' cabinet detailing so as to reduce coloration.rnThe Phi 7 has four bass drivers, reflex loaded via two rear-firing ports, plus a single midrange driver and ring tweeter. The three-way crossover is split to allow bi-wiring or bi-amping. Gold-plated shorting links are provided for single-wire operation but better results were had with Chord Signature links. With connection made to the lower pair of terminals the sound was slightly clouded and had an edge to it that could, for example, make violin tone a bit searing. When moved to the upper terminals the definition became more precise timbrally, rnspatially and dynamically, and that unpleasant rasp was suppressed.
