He plays Schubert like he's duelling the devil on a hickory stump, does Henning Kraggerud, who joins the celebrated Norwegian pianist to play viola on the Schubert sonata originally written for the short-lived six-stringed arpeggione. His viola's edgy overtones sit keenly on top of Cimse's soft-sounding piano, which is somewhat enclosed within a small room acoustic, and all is captured with such clarity that there's no hiding Kraggerud's regular intakes of breath and audible exhalations at just how fabulous it all is. But Gimse is the star here, with the beautiful and varied Schumann 'Scenes from Childhood' and back to Schubert for his gloomy but finger-bending A minor piano sonata, both delivering excellent dynamics despite that merest hint of underlying softness.
