Class D amplifiers offer great efficiency because, as their output devices are rapidly switched on or off (at least twice for each cycle of the audio waveform) they do not consume any idle current. The amplifier's bandwidth is tied to this switching frequency - the higher the frequency, the wider the response and the higher the reconstruction filter can be placed [seen opposite in the big air-cored inductors]. However, increasing the switching frequency also increases the chance of timing errors, creating dead bands (where neither device is switched on) or overlap (where both devices are switched on simultaneously). The former creates distortion, the latter a cloud of blue smoke...
