Rudimentary work on the album began at Pathway, an eight-track facility in north London where many of the basic cuts were recorded with engineer 'Bazza' Barry Farmer and later 'Chazza' Chas Herrington. 'It was a tiny little box,' said Lowe of Pathway. 'It sounded great, but you certainly didn't want to spend too much time there.'
