From Mercer Ellington to Miles Davis, Detroit born Carrett played with the greats before establishing himself as a leader in the mid-1980s. He recorded for many companies before a move to his hometown label Mack Avenue brought Live At The Iridium in 2008. Seeds is a studio album, themed on Garrett's career influences, but his working band play with flamboyant virtuosity and his solos really fly. There is steaming, tumbling Tyner-like piano from Venezuelan Benito Gonzalez, urged on by a truly great rhythm section. 'Detroit* is a haunting lament, made more poignant by a dubbed-in scratchy-LP background. Then 'Welcome Earth Song' takes a joyful trip to Africa, a trip not to be missed.
