As one who flourished in a number of genres - including country-and-western, for goodness' sake - Charles had a deep affinity for jazz. It permeated everything he did, because he always exhibited a jazz sensibility. And while this 1960 album certainly won't frighten off those more comfortable with jazz-less R&B, the hybridisation is faultless. Working with Quincy Jones - one of Charles' few genuine equals in the annals of 20th century music - and the Count Basie Orchestra, the result is a surf'n'turf of the two genres in the title. And all of it is graced with genius. The sound? Few are the woofers and tweeters worthy of this material. A must-have set.
