As Ry Cooder says in the movie, you never know what the public will buy, and even he was surprised by BVSC's runaway success when released on CD in 1997. This download offers double happiness for anyone upgrading to 24/96 from there, because this is an entirely different two-channel mix (different takes in two cases). It's less 'studio', more 'in the room', and Cooder himself is less prominent, his bottleneck guitar sitting centrally within the ensemble for 'Chan Chan' rather than raised to left-channel lead status as on the CD. Preference may be down to taste, but given plenty of wick this 96/24 version brims with both detail and ambience to recapture the rediscovered Cuban masters and divas performing their back catalogue under Cooder & Son's sympathetic production.
