PRO-JECT DEBUT CARBON (£300)

Ortofon's 2M Red [HFN Oct '08] offers a very high 6.5mV output and is 'tuned' to deliver a +1.5dB lift through the presence region. This, and its secure tracking beyond the extreme 80um groove, makes it the perfect choice for a low cost, high performance deck like the Debut Carbon. Sure enough the enlarged 12in metal platter might benefit from some damping (try replacing the felt mat with a lightweight rubber alternative) but start-up time and speed stability are very good for the price. Indeed, the 0.07% peak wow and flutter and shape of the spectrum [see Graph 1, below] are very similar indeed to the results we recorded for the Project V-Pack a year ago. The Debut features a DC PSU and motor that's decoupled from the plinth via two blobs of sorbothane, and weighted rumble, through the captive steel bearing, is very acceptable indeed at -68.8dB.
