The two main pieces on this second BBC PO recording under its new conductor prompt memories of the early stereo LPs of Ansermet, Argenta, Giulini: a Golden Age sonically. Falla's late suite, Homenajes, pays tribute to Debussy, Dukas, et al. It's the most interesting work here. The voice of Raquel Lojendio is a definite asset to the ballet score: phrased with sensitivity. But the acoustic of the MediaCity studio, Salford, is too 'wet' for my taste - contrast the still amazing 1962 Ansermet. Bavouzet brings his customary adroitness to the concerto, a work now rarely heard live.
