With the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, it's fair to say the engineering prowess of Sony's first ever CD player, the CDP-101, was hugely underappreciated in its day [see Vintage review, p108]. That day was nearly 30 years ago, a pivotal time in the history of our hobby that saw the Sony, along with Philips' CD 100 [see HFN Oct '11], change the face and sound of hi-fi forever. And yet, at least in part, the CDP-101 was a 'one off', an evolutionary dead-end whose technological genes would not see the light of day again, until recently.
