Lekeu, a typhoid victim aged only 24, was a follower of Franck and his large-scale sonata (which does contain some lovely music) fits oddly with the Ravel: an unfinished sonata, the one with the 'Blues' movement, the Lisztian Tzigane and a Berceuse (violin muted) in honour of his teacher Faure. 'A rare mishit for the composer' sniffs the FT reviewer of Tzigane but Ibragimova, with her fearsome concentration and riveting technical assurance, suggests it's on par with the Bartok solo Sonata (which one hopes she'll soon record). The partnership with Tiberghien is revelatory.
