Written in exile in the States, Martinu's first five symphonies appeared annually from 1941, when he was 51. The Sixth followed after a gap, in 1953 - some collectors will recall the ground-breaking Munch /RCA LP. Belohlavek, who grappled with these often hyperactive, dense works as a student, is convinced of their real significance (as he argues in the booklet), and he's made earlier recordings with Czech orchestras. This integral cycle was recorded live at the Barbican in winter 2009-10, the BBC engineers getting a quite different sound from LSO Live productions: a little less forward, with a wider soundstage.
