Would you believe: a new music performance hall in London, with fine acoustics, that has been sealed from all human access for nearly 150 years? Well it's true. Ride the commuter train between Rotherhithe and Wapping in London's old docklands and it will take you by tunnel under the Thames. This, the Thames Tunnel, is the oldest tunnel in the world's oldest underground train system. The new old subterranean music venue is a by-product of this. The tunnel was dug between 1825 and 1843 under the famous father and son engineering team Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunei. Two huge brick shafts on either side of the river, initially used for lowering the enormous digging machines, later became Grand Entrance Halls for the general public.
