Reel-to-reel tape recorders have enjoyed a bit of a renaissance in recent times, though for some they have always been an essential part of the hi-fi chain offering a ready and reliable means of being able to record and replay high quality recordings via analogue tape. By the mid-1950s, half-track stereo tape had been marketed by HMV under its Stereosonic brand. This paved the way for other manufacturers, until by the mid-1960s the technology was at a point where it was possible to produce outstanding recordings at home.
