For almost as long as I can remember, Marantz has been producing 'hot-rodded' versions of selected products, all reflecting the personal taste and considerable experience of Brand Ambassador Ken Ishiwata [see boxout, p39]. Over the years there have been Limited Edition, Special Edition and Kl Signature CD players and amplifiers, all based on current models but subject to rethinks on components and various other aspects of design - but even I hadn't realised quite how long this project had been going on. I should have got a clue some six years ago, when an event was held to celebrate Ishiwata's 30 years with the company, but now we're 30 years on from the arrival of the first Marantz 'special' product - the CD-45LE - and it's being marked with the introduction of these Special Edition versions of the SA-14S1 SACD/CD player/ DAC and PM-14S1 amplifier, each selling for a not unreasonable £1799.
