There are many types of pick-ups presently offered on the high-fidelity market [writes Stanley Kelly], and they can be divided into two basically different types: crystal and electro-magnetic. Condenser pick-ups have met with little success while variable resistance pickups, sometimes called frequency modulation types, have never passed outside the portals of the laboratory.
