Back in the July 2015 issue I discussed the BBC's rebuild of its iPlayer systems, which went under the name of the AudioFactory project. In part, the changes were made in order that the system would be scalable and so able to meet the ever-rising numbers of requests for the iPlayer service from listeners. The BBC also wanted to adopt openly agreed access methods. However, from the listener's point of view, the key aim was to ensure that all the corporation's radio stations would be delivered with the same high audio quality. Before AudioFactory, only BBC Radio 3 was streamed at 320kb/s AAC. It was treated as a 'special case' - much to the irritation of listeners to other stations such as 6 Music who considered themselves stuck in the 128kb/s 'slow lane'.
