A case of hall or nothing?

In his Opinion piece 'Canned acoustics' in the December issue I do think Barry Fox has been unfair about Yamaha's DSP (Digital Soundfield Processing) system. Yes, of course, it's not the proper conduct of an audiophile to superimpose the acoustics of one venue over the efforts of another recording team in another venue. But very judiciously applied, the effect can be very satisfying - particularly if the two venues are the same. It is important, though, that the four 'effect' speakers to the front and rear can be separately adjusted from the main stereo pair. And perhaps Barry's choice of recordings do not lend themselves to the effects? I listen exclusively to classical music and some of the concert hall 'effects' can be very good if wisely chosen and adjusted. 'Plugged-in' music won't suit.
