Driven directly via its single-ended headphone socket, the DP-SI DAP's maximum output is limited to just 6mW/25ohm or 0.3mW/600ohm but switching this same socket to (variable) line output mode increases this by 10x to 62mW/25ohm or 3.4mW/600ohm. Onkyo warns that the line out mode should not be used with headphones for fear of causing hearing damage and while the intent is laudable there are, of course, already many headphone preamps that readily exceed this output power. In both modes, three 'gain' settings are offered, the High and Low modes delivering +6dB and -6dB relative to the 'Normal' mode. My tests were all conducted in 'High' mode where the maximum output into 25ohm is achieved with peak level digital files (OdBFs) when the volume reaches 57.
