There has been a significant increase in the popularity of portable headphone DAC/amps in recent years, giving rise to impressive products such as the Chord Mojo [HFN Jan ' 16] and the rugged, outdoor-oriented RHA Dacamp L1 [HFN May' 17]. These devices add a welcome extra dimension to the sound quality that you can get from conventional smartphones, but my own experience with the Dacamp L1 has taught me that walking around with the chunky lump of metal connected to my iPhone and an extra set of cables to untangle isn't the most elegant or practical way of listening to music on the move.
