I read Steve Harris's column in the 2018 HFN Yearbook, in which he discussed the delay in switching off FM, with a wry smile. On tuning-in to BBC Radio 3 on 92.2 FM last week I was surprised to hear an announcement advising that the frequency was being taken by BBC Wales to increase coverage of Welsh language broadcasts. The advice was that listeners should re-tune to 90.5 FM or turn to DAB or Internet radio. Re-tuning, I find the signal strength so reduced that stereo is unlistenable. So now I must change my ageing, but OK, tuner for one with DAB+.Perhaps a newer FM section will perform better. The Rotel T11 FM/ DAB+ tuner seems to be the one for me as Internet radio has no appeal. In any case, I have no room anywhere near my hi-fi for a laptop and I don't have a smartphone. 'What's he doing reading Hi-Fi News then?' I hear some asking. Because I like Hi-Fi News, that's why. I've been reading the magazine for years and, unlike FM radio, some of the good things in life don't change!
