EuP Directive in force by end of 2011

The Energy-Using Products Directive, the European Commission's (EC) proposal intended to force heating manufacturers to design more energy-efficient products, will go live by the end of the year. However, extensive lobbying by the UK heating industry has forced the EC to water down its initial proposals. The requirement that all boilers would be boxed and dispatched with control systems such as time-clocks, thermostats and TRV's, looks to have been dropped, as has the requirement that NOx emissions for oil-fired boilers do not exceed 35mg/kwh. The limit for oil-fired boilers is now likely to be i2omg/kwh, and 35mg/kwh for gas-fired boilers. The scheme also originally stated that heating products must carry consistent labelling across the European Union to enable customers to make a comparison between technologies.
