EQuIS Hazardous Waste Site Data Management Software Evaluated By SITE Program

Created in 1986, EPA's Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program is responsible for demonstrating the performance, reliability, and cost of innovative technologies that can be used to clean up Superfund sites. This information can be used in conjunction with other data to select appropriate technologies for remedial projects. To date, most of the SITE evaluations have focused on sampling, monitoring, and remedial technologies. However, EPA recently assessed a data management system that may be used to consolidate and more easily evaluate the large quantities of chemical and geological data gathered during cleanups. The software system, which was designed by EarthSoft, Inc., is called the Environmental Quality Information System (EQuIS) software package. During the SITE evaluation, EPA's contractor (Science Applications International Corporation [SAIC]) assessed the software to determine if it performed the functions claimed by EarthSoft, Inc., and to determine the accuracy of the program's output. Cost estimates for full-scale application of the technology were also compiled. Results of the SITE evaluation were presented in EarthSoft, Inc. Environmental Quality Information System―EQulS~(~R): Innovative Technology Evaluation Report, EPA-540-R-02-503, May 9,2002. The report was published by U.S. EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL).
