Road Map for the Use of Innovative Technologies at Brownfields

Across the country, many former industrial and commercial sites sit abandoned, creating an eyesore for the local community and preventing urban redevelopment. Why are these sites, which are defined as "brownfields" by EPA, unused? Often, the reason is environmental contamination that the owner will not, or cannot afford to, clean up, or perceived contamination, which prevents property transfer. EPA established the Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative and Brown-fields Technology Support Center (BTSC) to help states, communities, and other stakeholders accomplish the redevelopment of these sites. The BTSC, established in 1999, assists brownfield decision makers by pre-senttng strategies for streamlining site assessment and cleanup, identifying technology options, evaluating plans and documents, describing complex technologies to communities, and providing demonstration support.
