The Latest NPRI and TRI Reports

Environment Canada requires that anyone in Canada that owns or operates a facility with 10 employees or more and that produces more than 10 tonnes of any of the 176 pollutants annually that are listed in its National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) must report their discharges. It's the country's only national publicly accessible inventory of such pollutants, and is modeled closely on the US Toxic Release Inventory. The most current report—for 1996 data—was released in August 1998. (Environment Canada will release the report on 1997 data during the first half of 1999.) Reporting changes allow greater exposure of pollutant releases. NPRI now provides comparisons, ranking polluters by: substances, emissions, discharge (to land, air, and water) and total emissions (by region).
