The wall wash test is widely relied on as an indication of tank cleanliness but, argues Guy Johnson, there is a danger that its shortcomings are being ignored, particularly by cargo interests. The wall wash inspection is still the most tried and tested means of determining the chemical cleanliness of the inside of a cargo tank or container. The test is used both during the cleaning of tanks and immediately prior to the loading of a sensitive chemical cargo.
