At a recent chemical logistics conference in Shanghai, frustrations were run-ning high. Attendees, who came to the event from around the globe, began exiting the auditorium in disgust after only the second speaker. By lunchtime, the room was half empty. However the audiencr's frustration was not a no-confidence vote in the possibilities of doing business in China. In fact, it was just the opposite - an indicator of just how desperately players from every sector of the industry want quality information about dangerous goods issues in China and other Asian markets. The problem at the conference was that the speakers' ideas were not effectively reaching the audience. There were problems with the language-translating apparatus at the venue, and those problems were probably exacerbated by some of the naturally occurring cultural confusions that can come into play when individuals from many different national backgrounds come together.
