A macabre selection this month to start off the new year, beginning in Inner Mongolia where, some three years ago, Wang Diange was found dead in a house where he was overseeing the wake of a family funeral. Mourners reported a loud explosion that took off half the roof. The day was stormy and the police assumed Mr Wang had been struck by lightning. It was only a few days later, when his body was being cremated, that something else seemed to be involved. His body exploded spectacularly, blowing the doors off the oven. When the fire had been put out, the only clue was a small piece of twisted metal, perhaps the remains of a screw.
