More than 1,500 homes in Aichi prefecture, Japan were left without electricity one Sunday afternoon last month. Chubu Electric Power identified a short circuit at a local sub-station. A spokesman explained to Fuji TV that the fault was caused by a buildup of bird droppings, which created a conductive connection between cables and a metal frame. The firm is going to put protective cages around sensitive equipment in future.
