Global demand for ethanol is on the increase but it brings new risks during transport and storage and new challenges for emergency responders. SP Fire Technology and the Swedish Petroleum Institute have developed a proposal for a research project on ethanol tank fire fighting and taken a critical first step in spreading the word An ethanol tank fire in Port Kembla in Australia in 2004 took more than 20 hours to extinguish, despite fire crews arriving on site within 30 minutes of the fire starting. The tank contained 4,000 m~3 ethanol and air cranes tried to dump thousands of litres of AFFF-AR foam on top of the fire to smother the fire.
