Cast your mind back three years. There we all were, happy in the safe and secure knowledge of a world of continued growth; economic ills had been banished and we could all look forward to a long and well funded retirement. Had we not also eradicated world hunger and illness, or is that just a false memory? Whatever, they were certainly some good times. How quickly they vanished. It seemed a matter of days, even if it was more like weeks, that it took the world's economies to shudder to a halt and embark on a downward spiral that seemed set to ruin us all. That was back in the third quarter of 2008; by the end of the year we all wondered just how bad it was going to get.
