Sustainability is all the rage. For users of industrial packaging, the target of sustainability points to wider use of re-usable or reconditionable packagings, greater take-up of collection services and a market for pre-used drums and intermediate bulk containers (IBCs). Given that 'sustainability' often translates directly into lower lifecycle costs, it might seem self-evident that this is a good thing but, as delegates to the second international conference of the International Confederation of Container Reconditioners (ICCR), which took place in Amsterdam this past June 4 to 7, heard, there are limits on how far reconditioned drums and IBCs can penetrate the market.
